Sodium Pentosan Polysulfate (PPS) is a semi-synthetic polysaccharide derived from beech wood. It is a linear macromolecule classified as a polyelectrolyte in the form of a sulfated polyanion.
Applications
For over 50 years, Sodium Pentosan Polysulfate has been successfully marketed as an ointment and gel for treating superficial venous inflammation or hematomas caused by bruises, muscle fiber tears, and sprains.
In tablet and injectable solution forms, PPS has traditionally been used for the supportive treatment of atherosclerotic vascular diseases and intermittent claudication.
A key application of Sodium Pentosan Polysulfate is in the treatment of interstitial cystitis – a serious chronic bladder inflammation without signs of bacterial infection.
As a veterinary medicine, PPS is used worldwide to treat non-infectious musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., osteoarthritis), reduce lameness, and relieve pain symptoms.
