Description

Fingolimod, marketed under the brand name Gilenya®, is an immunomodulating drug primarily used for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Its effect in patients with primary progressive MS remains unclear. Fingolimod is a sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator that sequesters lymphocytes in lymph nodes, preventing their involvement in autoimmune reactions.

Clinical Efficacy

Fingolimod has been reported to reduce relapse rates in relapsing-remitting MS by approximately half over a two-year period.

Additional Application

The drug may also be used in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).
