Description
5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium iodide is an organic salt (CAS 42464-96-0) with an iodide ion. Due to its cationic backbone and amino group in the aromatic ring, this compound is in demand for the production of fluorescent labels, biosensors, and the development of new pharmaceutical drugs.
Biological Activity
5-Amino-1MQ is a small, selective, membrane-permeable molecule that acts as an inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). It is a methylquinolinium (MQ) derivative that has demonstrated high efficacy in NNMT inhibition, cell viability, and membrane permeability.
Potential Research Applications
This NNMT inhibitor may be studied for:
Prevention of adipogenesis and type II diabetes
Reversal of diet-induced obesity (via increased intracellular NAD⁺ and SAM)
Activation of stem cells and improvement of skeletal muscle regenerative capacity
Mechanism of Action
The NNMT enzyme is associated with both obesity and type 2 diabetes and plays a role in intracellular energy homeostasis. Inhibition of NNMT has been shown to lead to significant weight loss, reduced fat mass and adipocyte size, and decreased plasma cholesterol and glucose levels.
Animal Study Data
A mouse study administering 5-Amino-1MQ showed a 7% reduction in body weight without any changes in food intake compared to the control group. Research indicates that NNMT reduction may help reduce fat cells and adipose tissue.
