Overview
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a widely used synthetic phenolic antioxidant. It is effective in preventing the oxidative degradation of fats, oils, vitamins, and other sensitive ingredients in feed, food, and industrial products. Its excellent oil solubility, thermal stability, and lack of reactivity with metal ions make it a versatile choice for various applications.
Applications
Feed industry: Protects vitamins, fats, and proteins in animal feed from oxidation, improving shelf life and nutritional value; also exhibits mild antibacterial effects.
Food industry: Used as a preservative (E321) in edible oils, fats, baked goods, snacks, and cereals to prevent rancidity.
Cosmetics and personal care: Added to lipsticks, creams, and oils to prevent oxidation of oils and fragrances.
Industrial: Used as a stabilizer in lubricants, rubber, plastics, and fuels to inhibit degradation.
Key Benefits
High antioxidant activity – effectively scavenges free radicals.
Good thermal stability – suitable for high-temperature processing.
No off-odor or color reaction with metal ions – maintains product quality.
Synergistic effect – works well with BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and organic acids (e.g., citric acid) to enhance performance.
Oil-soluble – easily incorporated into lipid-based systems.
Recommended Use
Feed: Maximum dosage 150 g per ton of feed.
Food: Typically used at 0.01–0.1% by weight, depending on the product and regulations.
Combined with BHA and citric acid for synergistic protection.
Safety and Handling
BHT is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in food and feed at approved levels.
Avoid inhalation of dust; use appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, safety goggles, dust mask).
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat, and strong oxidizers.
Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent contamination.
Packaging
Available in 1 kg, 5 kg, 25 kg, and 50 kg bags or drums. Custom packaging upon request.
Quality Assurance
Each batch is tested for purity, melting point, and antioxidant activity to ensure consistent performance.
