Cerium carbonate is an important representative of rare earth metals used as a raw material for the production of cerium oxide, which is widely used in ceramics, automotive catalytic converters, as well as in the production of polishing pastes for glass and plastics. Due to its specific optical and catalytic properties, cerium carbonate is of strategic importance in high-tech industries.

Chemical structure and synthesis

Taking into account the valence of cerium (+3), the typical formula of cerium carbonate can be represented as Ce2(CO3)3 (sometimes as a hydrate).

Synthesis:
Cerium carbonate is obtained by precipitation reaction of a solution of a cerium salt (e.g., nitrate) with a solution of a carbonate agent (e.g., sodium carbonate):

2Ce(NO3)3+3Na2CO3→Ce2(CO3)3↓+6NaNO3.

Physico-chemical properties

  • Color: Is usually a white or light yellow powder.

  • Solubility: It is slightly soluble in water, which is due to the characteristic properties of carbonates.

  • Heat resistance: It has high temperature resistance, which allows it to be used for the synthesis of high-temperature oxides.

  • Crystallinity: It has a stable crystalline structure typical of inorganic carbonates of rare earth elements.

Application

  • Ceramic industry: The raw material for the production of cerium oxide, which is used for the production of ceramic coatings and components.

  • Polishing pastes: It is used as a component for polishing glass, plastic and metals due to its high level of abrasiveness.

  • Catalytic processes: It is used as a component of catalytic systems in the chemical industry.

  • Automotive industry: It is used as a material for catalytic converters to reduce emissions of harmful substances.

Conclusion

Cerium carbonate is a strategically important rare earth material that serves as the basis for the production of cerium oxide and further ceramic and catalytic materials. Its physico-chemical properties provide wide application in high-tech industries, including the automotive and polishing industries.
