Overview
Pure tung oil is a natural drying oil extracted from the seeds of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii), native to China and other parts of Asia. For centuries, it has been valued as a waterproof coating for boats, wooden items, and stone surfaces. It serves as an excellent alternative to other drying oils such as walnut oil, linseed oil, and soybean oil, offering superior water resistance and durability.

Key Properties

  • Natural drying oil – polymerizes upon exposure to air to form a hard, durable film.

  • Excellent water resistance – ideal for outdoor and marine applications.

  • Good penetration into wood and stone – provides deep protection.

  • Non-toxic and food-safe once fully cured.

  • High gloss finish – enhances the natural beauty of wood grain.

  • UV resistant – offers good protection against sunlight degradation.

Applications

  • Wood finishing – furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and musical instruments.

  • Marine use – boat decks, spars, and exterior woodwork.

  • Stone treatment – sealing and waterproofing of natural stone surfaces.

  • Food contact surfaces – cutting boards, bowls, and utensils (requires full curing).

  • Antique restoration – traditional finish for historical woodwork.

  • Coatings and varnishes – as a base oil for oil-based paints and varnishes.

Recommended Application
Apply as a thin coat using a brush, cloth, or spray. Allow each coat to penetrate for 10–15 minutes, then wipe off excess. Multiple coats (typically 3–5) may be applied, with 24–48 hours drying time between coats. For faster curing, thin the oil with citrus solvent or mineral spirits.

Curing and Safety

  • Tung oil polymerizes by oxidation – allow adequate ventilation during application and curing.

  • Oily rags and cloths used with tung oil can spontaneously combust – immerse in water or lay flat to dry before disposal.

  • Keep away from heat, sparks, and flames.

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, safety goggles) when handling.

Handling and Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

  • Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent skinning and contamination.

  • Shelf life: typically 12–24 months when stored properly.
