Introduction
Chiral dopants (also called doping agents) are impurities introduced into a substance (in very low concentrations) to modify the electrical or optical properties of the substance. In the case of crystalline substances, dopant atoms typically occupy the positions of elements that were in the crystal lattice of the base material. Crystalline materials are often either semiconductor crystals (such as silicon and germanium) for use in solid-state electronics, or transparent crystals for producing various types of lasers. However, in some cases, non-crystalline substances such as glass can also be doped with impurities.
Key Applications
Impurities can be useful for increasing the thickness of electrodeposited mineral layers. The conductivity of semiconductors can be altered by intentionally adding impurity atoms known as dopants.
Specific technological applications include:
Twisted nematic displays (low concentrations)
Chiral films for displays
Polarization-sensitive polymer films
Thermally addressed display materials
Note: In many cases, due to solubility limitations of additives or specific material requirements, only small concentrations of chiral dopants can be used.
