Tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) – Low-Temp Oxygen Bleach Activator

TAED is a highly effective oxygen bleach activator for low-temperature laundering. Derived from ethylenediamine and acetic anhydride, it enables peroxide bleaching below 60°C. It is biodegradable, eco-friendly, and compatible with silicates, enzymes, and surfactants. Essential for modern detergent formulations delivering stain removal and whitening at cold wash cycles.

Tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) – High-Performance Oxygen Bleach Activator

Tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED), also known as N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetylethylenediamine, is a white crystalline solid with a mild acetic odor. It is a key ingredient in modern oxygen-based bleaching systems, specifically designed to activate hydrogen peroxide (peroxide) at lower temperatures – typically between 40 °C and 60 °C.

Chemistry and Mechanism:
TAED reacts with hydrogen peroxide in the wash liquor to form peracetic acid (peroxyacetic acid), a powerful oxidizing agent. Peracetic acid is much more reactive than hydrogen peroxide alone, providing effective bleaching, stain removal, and disinfection even in cold or warm water. This reaction is pH-dependent and works best in alkaline conditions (pH 9–11).

Key Benefits:

  • Energy saving: Enables effective bleaching at low temperatures, reducing energy consumption.

  • Stain removal: Excellent for removing tea, coffee, fruit, red wine, and grass stains.

  • Whiteness preservation: Prevents yellowing and maintains fabric brightness.

  • Compatibility: Stable in granular detergents, tabs, and powders; does not interfere with enzymes, silicates, builders, or surfactants.

  • Environmental safety: Fully biodegradable; degrades into ethylenediamine and acetic acid, which are harmless to aquatic life.

Applications:

  • Laundry detergents (powders, tablets, and pods)

  • Automatic dishwashing (ADW) formulations

  • Industrial textile bleaching

  • Household stain removers and pre-soak products
