Overview
Sylgard 184 is a two‑component transparent silicone elastomer manufactured by Dow Corning. It offers good flame retardancy and high mechanical strength, making it a reliable choice for demanding electronic applications. The material can be cured at room temperature or with heat, providing flexibility in processing. It is similar to Sylgard 182 but offers room‑temperature curing capability.

Key Properties

  • High transparency – allows visual inspection of embedded components.

  • Good flame retardancy – suitable for UL and Mil‑spec applications.

  • High strength – provides durable mechanical protection.

  • Fast and flexible curing – temperature‑controlled process for ease of use.

  • Low viscosity – good flow and penetration into tight spaces.

Applications

  • Potting and encapsulation of relays, power supplies, magnetic amplifiers, transformers, coils, and ferrite cores.

  • Coating for fiber optic waveguides.

  • Packaging for printed circuit boards (PCBs).

  • Solar cell encapsulation.

  • General electronic component protection.

Important Processing Notes

  • Do not allow the uncured material to contact amines (e.g., epoxy resins), sulfides (e.g., polyurethane), or unsaturated hydrocarbon plastics (e.g., PVC) – these will inhibit curing and cause permanent tackiness.

  • If viscosity is too high or penetration insufficient, the material can be diluted with DC‑244 (dilution ratio ≤10%).

  • Thorough mixing is essential for proper curing.

Handling and Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

  • Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent contamination.

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, safety goggles) when handling.

Packaging
Available in kits (base + curing agent) and various container sizes. Custom packaging upon request.
