Characteristics

Phenylacetate is an acetic acid ester obtained by formal condensation of phenol with acetic acid. It belongs to the class of phenylacetates and benzenes. It is derived from phenol.

It is an aromatic fatty acid metabolite of phenylalanine with potential antitumor activity. Naturally occurring in mammals, phenylacetate induces differentiation, growth inhibition, and apoptosis in tumor cells. The mechanisms of action involved include:

• Reduction of protein prenylation

• Activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs)

• Inhibition of DNA methylation

• Glutamine depletion

Application
