Overview
Glycolic acid is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), naturally derived from sugar cane. It is widely used across multiple industries due to its excellent solubility, mild acidity, and ability to penetrate biological and industrial surfaces.
Applications
Medicine: Used in the production of absorbable sutures and as an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis. High-purity (99%) crystals are employed in drug manufacturing.
Industrial cleaning: A 70% aqueous solution is used as an effective cleaner for air conditioners, boilers, power plant pipes, and oil pipelines. A mixture of 2% glycolic acid and 1% formic acid provides enhanced cleaning performance.
Cosmetics and personal care: An effective exfoliant for removing dead skin cells, fine hair, and wrinkles. It helps prevent skin aging and is widely used in dermatological treatments and anti-aging formulations.
Household and institutional cleaning: Used in formulations for hard surface cleaners, descalers, and rust removers.
Other uses: Improves nickel plating quality, acts as a component in solder fluxes, and serves as a chemical intermediate for various organic syntheses.
