Overview
Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is an organosulfur compound with a characteristic strong odor. It is a volatile, flammable liquid with high chemical stability. Its unique sulfur-containing structure makes it a valuable reagent in petroleum refining, agriculture, organic synthesis, and the flavor industry.
Applications
Petroleum refining: Used as a sulfiding agent to convert metal oxide catalysts into their active metallic sulfide form for hydrotreating, hydroforming, and hydrocracking processes. Also employed as a passivation agent to reduce coke formation in furnaces and reactors, improving run length and equipment life. With a sulfur content of 68% by weight, DMDS is one of the most efficient sulfiding agents available.
Agriculture: Acts as a broad‑spectrum soil fumigant effective against nematodes, soil‑borne pathogens, fungi, weeds, and insects. It is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to methyl bromide.
Organic synthesis: Serves as a reagent and intermediate in the production of sulfur‑containing compounds, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and rubber additives.
Flavor and fragrance: Used as a food additive to impart onion, garlic, cheese, meat, and savory flavors.
Other uses: Corrosion inhibitor, jet fuel additive (replacing methyl mercaptan), and reagent in analytical chemistry.

DMDS is highly flammable – store away from ignition sources, heat, and oxidizing agents.
