Carbon disulfide is a high‑purity volatile solvent and chemical intermediate with a wide range of industrial applications. It is produced by the reaction of sulfur with methane or charcoal. The product is supplied at ≥97% purity and is used globally as a key raw material for viscose rayon, cellophane, and carbon tetrachloride, as well as in the production of agricultural chemicals, rubber additives, and flotation agents.

Applications

  • Viscose fibers and cellophane: Primary raw material for the production of viscose rayon and cellophane film.

  • Flotation reagents: Xanthates derived from CS₂ are widely used as collectors in ore flotation processes.

  • Agricultural chemicals: Intermediate for pesticides, fungicides (e.g., mancozeb, thiram, ziram), and herbicides.

  • Rubber industry: Used as a solvent for sulfur chloride in vulcanization and as an accelerator intermediate.

  • Solvent applications: Excellent solvent for fats, waxes, resins, rubber, and sulfur; used in oil extraction (linseed, olive, animal bones), wool degreasing, and paint/varnish stripping.

  • Analytical chemistry: Solvent for testing primary/secondary amines and α‑amino acids, refractive index measurement, and chromatography.

  • Corrosion inhibition: Used in the manufacture of corrosion inhibitors for ammonia processing equipment and pipelines.
