Aerogel – Ultralight Nanoporous Material for Advanced Insulation and Functional Applications
Overview
Aerogel, also known as "frozen smoke," "solid smoke," "solid air," or "blue smoke," is a synthetic porous material derived from a gel in which the liquid component has been replaced with a gas. It is widely recognized as the best thermal insulator and the lightest solid material known to date. Over 90% of its volume consists of air trapped within an extremely fine nanoporous network, while the remaining structure is composed of interconnected three‑dimensional clusters of silica (or other oxide) nanoparticles.
Key Advantages
Unmatched thermal insulation: Extremely low thermal conductivity, outperforming conventional insulation materials.
Excellent light scattering: Translucent appearance with unique optical properties.
Outstanding physical stability: Maintains structural integrity under various conditions.
Enhanced acoustic performance: Can be tailored for sound absorption and acoustic impedance matching.
High porosity and specific surface area: Provides abundant active sites for adsorption, catalysis, and energy storage.
Extremely low density: One of the lightest materials known, with bulk density often below 0.1 g/cm³.
Applications
Thermal insulation: Ideal for aerospace, cryogenics, building insulation, and industrial pipelines where superior heat resistance is required.
Gas filtration: Unique nanostructure makes it suitable as a highly efficient gas filter media.
Energy storage and catalysis: High surface area enables use as a support for catalysts, supercapacitors, and battery electrodes.
Space exploration: High porosity allows it to capture high‑velocity particles via "soft landing" – valuable for cosmic dust collection.
Acoustic applications: Wide tunability of acoustic impedance makes it suitable for ultrasonic sensors and sound‑absorbing materials.
Handling and Storage
Aerogel is fragile and hydrophilic; handle with care to avoid crushing or contamination.
Store in a dry, sealed environment to prevent moisture adsorption and degradation of performance.
Use appropriate protective equipment (dust mask, gloves) during handling to avoid inhalation of fine particles.
Quality Assurance
Each batch is characterized for density, porosity, specific surface area (BET), and thermal conductivity to ensure consistent performance.
