Overview
1-Dodecanethiol, also known as dodecyl mercaptan or lauryl mercaptan, is a high-purity thiol compound widely used as a chain transfer agent and polymerization regulator in the production of synthetic rubbers, synthetic fibers, and synthetic resins. Its excellent regulating properties allow precise control over molecular weight distribution during polymerization processes, improving the consistency and performance of final polymer products.
Applications
Polymer industry: Acts as a molecular weight regulator (chain transfer agent) in emulsion and solution polymerizations of styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, acrylic resins, and other vinyl polymers.
PVC stabilizers: Serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of organotin and other heat stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride.
Pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals: Used in the synthesis of active ingredients for drugs, pesticides, and fungicides.
Detergents and surfactants: Precursor for the production of specialty surfactants and lubricant additives.
Other uses: Intermediate for corrosion inhibitors, flotation agents, and oilfield chemicals.
Key Benefits
High purity ensures consistent reaction kinetics and product quality.
Low color and low odor compared to crude mercaptans.
Good solubility in organic solvents and monomer systems.
Effective at low concentrations, minimizing cost and residual odor in finished polymers.
Recommended Usage
Typical dosage ranges from 0.1 to 2.0 percent of monomer weight, depending on desired molecular weight and polymerization conditions. Optimize through trial runs for specific formulations.
Safety and Handling
1-Dodecanethiol has a strong, characteristic mercaptan odor; handle in well-ventilated areas.
May cause skin and eye irritation; wear appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, protective clothing).
Combustible liquid; keep away from open flames and strong oxidizers.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, preferably under inert gas (nitrogen) to prevent oxidation.
Avoid contact with acids and strong bases, which may cause decomposition.
Packaging
Available in 1 L, 5 L, 20 L, and 200 L drums, as well as custom packaging on request.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store in tightly sealed containers away from light and heat. Shelf life is 24 months under recommended conditions.
Quality Assurance
Each batch is tested for purity (GC), water content (Karl Fischer), acid value, and color to ensure compliance with industry standards.
