Overview
Polyglyceryl-10 stearate (decaglyceryl monostearate) is a non-ionic surfactant produced by the esterification of polyglycerin (average 10 glycerol units) with one molecule of stearic acid. The long hydrophilic chain of ten glycerol units provides excellent water solubility and a high HLB value (12–16), making it an effective oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier. It is a PEG-free, plant-derived emulsifier that is biodegradable and mild on skin.

Key Properties

  • Non-ionic – compatible with a wide range of ingredients and pH levels.

  • High HLB (12–16) – suitable for O/W emulsions, solubilization, and microemulsions.

  • Excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and stabilizing properties.

  • Mild and non-irritating – suitable for sensitive skin; no sensitizing effects.

  • PEG-free, PPG-free, and 1,4-dioxane free.

  • Biodegradable and derived from renewable plant-based sources.

Applications

  • Cosmetics and personal care: Used as a primary or co-emulsifier in O/W creams, lotions, milks, sunscreens, makeup removers, and decorative cosmetics. Provides stable, elegant textures with good skin feel.

  • Skin care: Imparts emollient and skin-softening properties.

  • Sunscreen formulations: Improves water resistance and stabilizes UV filters.

  • Hair care: Incorporated into conditioners and styling products for improved spreadability.

  • Deodorants and antiperspirants: Used in cosmetic deodorant formulations.

  • Pharmaceuticals: Employed in topical formulations as a mild emulsifier and stabilizer.

Key Benefits

  • Excellent O/W emulsification with high stability.

  • High HLB value enables solubilization of oils and active ingredients.

  • Mild and non-irritating – suitable for sensitive skin and baby products.

  • PEG-free, biodegradable, and of natural origin.

  • Compatible with a wide range of cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients.

  • Provides elegant, non-greasy textures with good spreadability.

Recommended Use
Typical usage levels range from 1–5% of the formulation, depending on the desired emulsion stability and texture. For optimal performance, dissolve in the oil phase at elevated temperatures (60–70°C) before emulsification. Can be combined with co-emulsifiers and thickeners for tailored rheology.

Safety and Handling

  • Generally recognized as safe for use in cosmetics at recommended concentrations.

  • Low irritation potential; well-tolerated by skin.

  • Avoid contact with strong oxidizers and acids.

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, safety goggles) when handling.

Quality Assurance
Each batch is tested for acid value, saponification value, HLB, and emulsification performance to ensure consistent quality.
