Technical potassium chloride (potassium chloride, KCl) is an inorganic compound, one of the most important potassium salts and a key product of the chemical industry. Its molecular mass is 74.55. It appears as a free-flowing crystalline product, white with a greyish or pinkish tint, readily soluble in water. Technical potassium chloride differs from agricultural-grade product by its higher purity and the absence of organochlorine compounds, making it suitable for use in demanding industrial processes.
Regulatory Framework and Grades
Requirements for potassium chloride in Russia and CIS countries are regulated by GOST 4568-95 "Potassium chloride. Specifications". The standard applies to potassium chloride obtained from potash ores and establishes requirements for the product intended for agriculture, industry and export. Depending on the intended use and production method, potassium chloride is produced in several grades and classes.
For industrial applications, particularly for the oil and gas sector, potassium chloride is supplied with a main substance content of at least 95% and a water mass fraction of no more than 0.5%. The product is 100% soluble in water and contains no organochlorine compounds, which is critical for drilling fluids.
Technical potassium chloride grades A and B, produced according to TU 2152-013-00203944-2011, is intended for use in industry as a feedstock for the production of chemical products. For both grades, the mass fraction of potassium chloride is at least 98.2%, potassium calculated as K₂O — at least 62.0%, and water — no more than 0.5%.
Production Technology
Industrial potassium chloride production is based on the processing of sylvinite ore — a natural mixture of potassium chloride and sodium chloride. Two main beneficiation methods are used: flotation and halurgy. In flotation, crushed ore is treated with reagents that impart hydrophobic properties to the surface of potassium chloride particles, after which the particles are separated using air bubbles. The halurgic method is based on the difference in solubility of potassium chloride and sodium chloride at different temperatures: the ore is dissolved in hot liquor, then the solution is cooled, and potassium chloride crystallises.
Applications
Oil and gas industry. This is the key application of technical potassium chloride. The product is used as a component in the preparation of drilling fluids, kill fluids, additives for cementing slurries and hydraulic fracturing fluids. Potassium chloride stabilises water-sensitive clays and shales, enables the production of kill fluids with a density of up to 1.17 kg/m³ and is compatible with most drilling fluid additives. In drilling, potassium chloride is the most widely used potassium source for clay inhibition.
Chemical industry. Technical potassium chloride serves as a feedstock for the production of potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, potassium permanganate and other potassium compounds. It is used in the production of leather substitutes, synthetic rubber, baker's and fodder yeast.
Agriculture. Potassium chloride grade "Fine" is used for the production of complex NPK fertilizers, as well as for direct application to the soil. Granular potassium chloride is a slow-release fertilizer and is used for the production of fertilizer blends.
Other applications. Potassium chloride is used in metallurgy for aluminium processing, in electroplating, in the production of glass and ceramics, and as a component of electrolytes.
Global Market
Estimates of the global potassium chloride market volume vary depending on the methodology. According to Mordor Intelligence, the market was valued at USD 26.52 billion in 2025, projected to reach USD 27.75 billion in 2026 and USD 35.64 billion by 2031 at a CAGR of 5.13%. According to GII Research, the market was valued at USD 24.33 billion in 2025, USD 25.95 billion in 2026, and is projected to reach USD 40.13 billion by 2034 at a CAGR of 5.6%.
Global potash fertilizer consumption reached 41.6 million tonnes of K₂O in 2025, with Asia and South America posting the strongest incremental demand. The Asia-Pacific region is the largest potassium chloride market. Key growth drivers are increasing demand for potassium fertilizers, the expansion of the oil and gas industry and growth in chemical production.
The main market trend remains the volatility of potash fertilizer prices. China's 2025 annual import contract settled at USD 346 per tonne (CFR), raising the global cost baseline. Canada supplied 79% of U.S. potash imports through 2024, reflecting the scale of North American supply dependence.
Production in Russia
Russia is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of potassium chloride. According to forecasts by the Centre for Conjuncture Research, in 2025 potassium chloride production in Russia grew by 3% to 16.9 million tonnes, and export supplies increased by 4% to 13.3 million tonnes. The main importers of Russian potassium chloride are Brazil, China and the USA.
In 2025–2029, investments in the modernisation of potassium chloride production capacities are planned at RUB 200 billion, which will allow production to be increased to more than 3 million tonnes by the end of 2026 and subsequently to a level exceeding 5 million tonnes per year. The largest producers of potassium chloride in Russia are enterprises developing the Verkhnekamskoye potash deposit in the Perm region.
Safety and Storage
Potassium chloride belongs to substances with low toxicity and is non-flammable. When working with it, personal protective equipment must be used: respirators, protective goggles and protective clothing. Storage is carried out in closed warehouse premises, excluding contamination and ingress of atmospheric and ground water. Storage of the product in containers on hard-surfaced areas equipped with canopies is permitted. The guaranteed shelf life of the product is 6 months from the date of manufacture.
Conclusion
Technical potassium chloride remains one of the key products of the global chemical industry, providing drilling fluids for the oil and gas sector, feedstock for chemical synthesis and the production of potassium fertilizers. Growing demand for potassium fertilizers, the expansion of the oil and gas industry and increased chemical production create sustained demand for this essential product. Russia, possessing significant production capacities and implementing large investment projects, maintains its position as one of the leading players in the global potassium chloride market.
