Soy lecithin (food additive E322) is a mixture of fractions extracted from vegetable oils by physical methods. By their nature, lecithins are the most widespread group of polar lipids present in the cell membranes of all living organisms. In the food industry, lecithin is used as a highly effective additive that improves the emulsifying, dispersing and other rheological properties of various foods, as well as an antioxidant and stabilizer. For the B2B segment, soy lecithin matters as an ingredient with predictable technological characteristics that depend on the supply form (liquid, powdered, hydrolysed) and degree of purification.
Requirements for food lecithins E322 in Russia and EAEU countries are established by GOST 32052-2013 "Food additives. Lecithins E322. General specifications", put into effect by Rosstandart order No. 57-st of 26 April 2013. The standard applies to food additive E322, including soy, rapeseed and sunflower lecithin, and regulates requirements for quality, safety, labelling, packaging, transportation and storage.
According to the standard, lecithins are produced in liquid or powdered form. Key physico-chemical parameters for standard liquid lecithin include:
Requirements ensuring the safety of lecithins are set out in section 5.1.6 of the standard, quality requirements in sections 5.1.3-5.1.5, and labelling requirements in section 5.4. Lecithin is a non-toxic, fire- and explosion-safe product. For export supplies, quality must comply with the importing country's requirements, which in most cases are oriented towards Codex Alimentarius standards and Food Chemicals Codex monographs.
The Russian soy lecithin industry is formed by several large enterprises focused on deep processing of oilseeds. The largest producer remains Sodrugestvo Group, whose production complexes are located in Kaliningrad and Kursk Oblasts. In the city of Svetly (Kaliningrad Oblast), two lecithin production plants operate with a total output of 9,400 tonnes of lecithin per year, of which soy lecithin accounts for 2,400 tonnes. In the settlement of Kastornoye (Kursk Oblast), three lecithin production plants operate with a maximum annual output of over 28,000 tonnes.
The group's total soybean processing capacity is almost 6 million tonnes per year. Products are manufactured in compliance with GOST 32052-2013, TR CU 021/2011 and TR CU 029/2012, and E322 origin and purity specifications comply with Codex Alimentarius standards. Sodrugestvo lecithins are supplied in packaging from 200 to 1,000 kg depending on customer requirements.
The second significant producer is Lasenor Rusia LLC (Azov, Rostov Oblast). In 2023, the company's output amounted to 5,000 tonnes of soy and sunflower, liquid and hydrolysed lecithin. The enterprise's products fully replace imports, meeting the needs of the Russian food industry for emulsifiers. By 2026, a new food emulsifier plant is planned in Azov, which will increase production capacity to 8,000 tonnes.
A third development vector is linked to the Target Agro project in Amur Oblast. In the Amur advanced special economic zone in Blagoveshchensk, a deep soybean processing plant with a capacity of 300 thousand tonnes of soy per year is under construction with an investment of RUB 6.5 billion. The plant will produce lecithin, hydrated and refined oils, soy germ and food-grade soy meal ("white petal"). Construction is scheduled to start in 2025, with commissioning in 2027. Amur Oblast is the main agricultural region of the Far East: it produces 71% of soy in the district and 21% in Russia.
Additionally, regional producers operate in the industry, in particular the Irkutsk Fat and Oil Combine, which produces phosphatides and lecithin, as well as Amuragrotsentr, represented on the soy and rapeseed lecithin market.
Soy lecithin has a wide range of functional properties, making it an indispensable ingredient in many product matrices. It acts as an emulsifier, stabilizer, antioxidant and texturizer, improving consistency and extending product shelf life.
Key application areas include:
Lecithin is permitted for use in food products as additive E322 in accordance with TR CU 029/2012 "Safety requirements for food additives, flavourings and processing aids". Dosage depends on the product and is regulated by technical regulations and specific production formulations.
Russian soy lecithin exports show steady positive dynamics. According to Rosselkhoznadzor, from January to 21 May 2025, over 500 tonnes of soy and sunflower lecithin were shipped from Amur Oblast to China, including 485.6 tonnes of soy and 108 tonnes of sunflower lecithin. All products underwent laboratory testing, which found no quarantine pests, and the batches comply with the importing country's international quarantine phytosanitary requirements.
In 2025, specialists of the Don branch of the Federal Centre for Agro-Industrial Product Quality Assessment certified over 520 tonnes of lecithin for export. Products were supplied to Turkey, China, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Since the beginning of 2026, Russian producers have exported over 118.8 tonnes of lecithin and food additives to Turkey and China. Turkey received 18 tonnes of sunflower and 36 tonnes of soy lecithin, while China received 35.6 tonnes of sunflower and 29.2 tonnes of soy lecithin, as well as 3 tonnes of a food additive. Before shipment, products underwent quality and safety control for toxic elements, mycotoxins, radionuclides, pesticide residues and GMO content.
Export geography covers China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Chinese direction is a key growth driver, where Russian lecithin competes with local producers' products due to quality stability and the logistical proximity of Far Eastern plants. The development of the Target Agro project in Amur Oblast will increase export potential by reducing the logistics distance to Asian markets.
Soy lecithin is supplied in drums, cans, IBC containers and specialised metal tanks. Liquid lecithin is stored in well-cleaned closed metal tanks protected from sunlight at temperatures from 0 to 35 °C in accordance with GOST 32052-2013 requirements. When stored in original packaging in premises protected from light and heat, the shelf life of rapeseed lecithin in special containers is 18 months from the date of manufacture.
The product is sensitive to moisture and oxidation, so transportation requires protection from direct contact with water and compliance with temperature conditions. For Russian producers supplying products from plants in Kaliningrad, Kursk, Rostov and Amur Oblasts, the key sales markets remain the Central, Volga and Southern federal districts, where most processing capacity is concentrated. Export supplies to China are carried out by rail and sea through Far Eastern ports, while supplies to Turkey and the Middle East go through the Black Sea and Azov Sea ports.
Financial support for the transaction may include letters of credit, bank guarantees and cargo insurance. For long-term contracts, it is advisable to fix a mechanism for adjusting terms when raw material costs (soybeans), logistics tariffs and exchange rate fluctuations change.
The Russian soy lecithin market is at a stage of active growth and import substitution. The development of domestic production, increased capacity and improved product quality create prerequisites for reducing dependence on external supplies and expanding export potential. Key success factors are quality stability (mass fraction of acetone-insoluble substances, acid and peroxide values), compliance with GOST 32052-2013 and international standards, cost competitiveness and reliable logistics.
For buyers, not only price per kilogram matters but also the supply form (liquid, powdered, hydrolysed lecithin), raw material source (soy, sunflower, rapeseed), mass fraction of phosphatidylcholine, storage and packaging conditions, supply chain reputation, and availability of laboratory confirmation of compliance and a health certificate for export batches. Understanding standards, technological differences and market structure helps reduce risks and build long-term contracts.
