The Russian alcohol industry is undergoing a period of transformation: winemaking shows record growth in domestic production and gradual export expansion, while the spirits segment is recovering foreign supplies after the contraction of 2022. For the B2B segment, these products matter both in retail assortment and foodservice and as an object of international trade. The category's specificity lies in the fact that quality and safety are determined by raw materials, technological discipline, compliance with standards and strict state regulation of turnover.
The basic classification document in winemaking is GOST 32030-2021 "Wines. General specifications", put into effect on 1 January 2024 to replace GOST 32030-2013. The standard applies to wines, including table wines and table wine materials, as well as wines of geographical indications. Depending on the mass concentration of sugars, wines are divided into dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet.
A separate layer of regulation is GOST R 55242-2012 "Wines with protected geographical indication and wines with protected designation of origin. General specifications". This standard establishes requirements for PGI and PDO wines, which are produced in strictly defined regions according to regulated technologies. The presence of such categories allows Russian manufacturers to build premium lines with confirmed origin.
Sparkling wines are regulated by separate documents. Depending on the mass concentration of sugars, sparkling wines are divided into brut, extra brut, dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet. Sparkling wines, sparkling pearl wines and sparkling wines of traditional designation are also distinguished. The concept of "Russian champagne" is defined as sparkling wine produced on the territory of the Russian Federation, with a strength of 10.5 to 13% and a carbon dioxide pressure in the bottle of at least 3.5 bar.
Russian winemaking relies on the raw material base of Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Dagestan, Rostov Oblast, Stavropol Krai and North Ossetia. The climatic conditions of these regions allow the cultivation of both technical and table grape varieties. Technological schemes include grape acceptance and crushing, fermentation, ageing, processing and bottling. For PGI and PDO wines, additional restrictions apply to yields, varieties and production methods.
Modern Russian wineries increasingly use controlled fermentation in stainless steel, barrel ageing and automated bottling lines. As of 2025, about 200 wineries are licensed in Russia - from large enterprises with volumes of several million bottles per year to family projects with micro-batches. This industry structure creates a wide range of offerings for different price segments.
Vodka remains the key spirit of Russian production. According to Rosalkogoltabakkontrol, vodka production in 2025 amounted to about 79.3 million decalitres, 4.2% below the previous year. The decline is explained primarily by reduced domestic consumption and the reorientation of producers to export markets. Vodka production technology includes water preparation, spirit rectification, blending, filtration and bottling. Quality control covers organoleptic parameters, strength, alkalinity, content of aldehydes and fusel oils.
In addition to vodka, Russian manufacturers produce other spirits - cognac, whisky, gin, rum and liqueurs. Turnover regulation is carried out through the EGAIS system, which ensures traceability of products from producer to bottling. For export supplies, certificates of conformity with the importing country's requirements and compliance with excise legislation are additionally required.
Quality control in the alcohol industry includes incoming analysis of raw materials (spirit, water, grapes), control of semi-finished products and finished products. For wines, key parameters are organoleptics (colour, aroma, taste), volume fraction of ethyl alcohol, mass concentration of sugars, titratable acidity, content of volatile acids and sulphur dioxide. For vodka - strength, alkalinity, mass concentration of aldehydes, fusel oils and esters.
Special attention is paid to safety: content of toxic elements, pesticides, radionuclides and microbiological parameters. For export batches, additional verification is carried out for compliance with the importing country's requirements, including pesticide residues and phytosanitary norms for grapes.
The wine industry shows steady growth. According to Rosalkogoltabakkontrol, in January-July 2025, output of still wines in Russia grew by 12.6% to 20.9 million decalitres, and sparkling wines by 15.8% to 8.7 million decalitres. By the end of the year, the volume of products produced by Russian winemakers reached 59 million decalitres. The share of Russian wine in the domestic market grew to 63%, and in the sparkling wine segment to 74%. Russia ranked 11th in the world in wine production.
Sales of Russian wine reached a 15-year record. The departure of a number of foreign companies and the reorientation of consumers towards domestic products created space for the growth of local brands. In the consumption structure, interest in wines with protected geographical indication and premium categories is growing, which encourages producers to invest in quality and marketing.
In the spirits segment, domestic vodka consumption is declining, pushing producers to develop the export direction. This creates a structural shift: vodka is increasingly becoming an export commodity, while wine strengthens its position in the domestic market.
Wine exports remain small in absolute terms but show steady positive dynamics. In the first eight months of 2025, Russian wine supplies abroad increased by 31% in value and reached almost USD 4 million. In natural terms, growth was 17% to 2.5 thousand tonnes. Sparkling wines remain the export leader: about 1.5 thousand tonnes worth more than USD 2.4 million were shipped. Second place goes to grape wines in containers up to 2 litres: over 800 tonnes worth almost USD 1.5 million.
The largest markets by value were China (31% of exports), Belarus (23%), Kazakhstan (15%), Turkey (8%) and Abkhazia (6%). China in the first eight months of 2025 doubled imports of Russian wine compared to the same period last year, to more than USD 1.2 million, becoming the leader in purchases of this product from Russia.
By the end of 2025, Russian wineries exported 4.3 thousand tonnes of grape wine worth USD 7.5 million. Krasnodar Krai became the export leader, selling 2.3 thousand tonnes (53.9% in natural terms and 55.5% in value). Supplies were made to 28 countries. The top 5 importers of grape wines in natural terms included Belarus (1.2 thousand tonnes), China (1 thousand tonnes), Kazakhstan (1 thousand tonnes), Kyrgyzstan (226 tonnes) and Turkey (299.1 tonnes).
Exports of sparkling wines in 2025 reached 1.5 million litres worth USD 4.7 million, 44% more than a year earlier. Kazakhstan became the leader (425 thousand litres), followed by Belarus (358 thousand litres) and China (327 thousand litres). Sparkling wine supplies to China exceeded 600 tonnes worth almost USD 900 thousand, a historical record for Russian sparkling wine in China.
Vodka exports are recovering after the 2022 decline. According to EGAIS, in 2025 Russian producers shipped 2.6 million decalitres of vodka for export, 4% more year-on-year. In value terms, vodka exports exceeded USD 70 million against USD 56 million a year earlier - formally a quarter growth. After the closure of EU markets, the main supplies go to the CIS, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.
In the first six months of 2025, Russia supplied 16 thousand tonnes of vodka to foreign markets worth about USD 25 million. Supplies to India in January-August 2025 grew 3.2-fold to USD 500 thousand. Exports to China increased by 19%, and export revenue grew by 47.5% to USD 2.2 million. The top 5 countries accounted for more than 67% of total Russian vodka exports, indicating high supply concentration.
Key challenges for spirits exports are long logistics, ruble strengthening and competition with local producers. Nevertheless, manufacturers expect export growth in 2026 by an average of 10-15%.
Alcohol products require temperature control and protection from mechanical damage, especially for glass containers. Wine is sensitive to temperature fluctuations and light, which is important to consider when transporting in reefer containers. For spirits, protection from direct sunlight and sharp temperature changes is critical, as they can affect taste characteristics.
Packaging plays an important role: glass containers are used for wines, glass and PET for vodka. Transport packaging must provide rigidity and moisture protection. For international supplies, excise stamps, certificates of conformity and accompanying documents, including declarations of origin, are required.
Financial support for the transaction may include letters of credit, bank guarantees and cargo insurance. For long-term contracts, it is useful to fix a price adjustment mechanism for changes in raw material costs, excise duties and logistics tariffs, and to account for currency risks.
The Russian alcohol industry demonstrates adaptability and gradual strengthening of export positions. Key growth factors in winemaking include expanding vineyard areas, developing PGI and PDO categories, growing domestic demand for Russian wine and developing new export destinations (China, Middle East, Latin America). In the spirits segment - restoring supplies to Asia and Latin America, developing premium lines and adapting to new market requirements.
For buyers, not only price per litre matters but also quality stability, shelf life, storage conditions, supply chain reputation and a complete package of accompanying documents. Understanding standards, technological differences and the structure of export flows helps reduce risks and build long-term contracts with Russian manufacturers.
