Polypropylene Block Copolymer (PP-B) - Complete Overview
What is Polypropylene Block Copolymer?
Polypropylene block copolymer (PP-B), also known as Impact Copolymer (ICP), is a thermoplastic polymer obtained by the copolymerization of propylene with ethylene. Unlike homopolymer (PP-H), which consists only of propylene units, the block copolymer has a complex two-phase structure: a crystalline polypropylene matrix in which elastomeric (rubber-like) inclusions of ethylene-propylene copolymer are uniformly distributed.
This material combines the high stiffness characteristic of homopolymer with significantly increased impact toughness, especially at low temperatures. Thanks to this balance of properties, polypropylene block copolymer occupies key positions in the production of automotive parts, pipes, packaging, containers, and many other products.
How is Polypropylene Block Copolymer Produced?
The production of polypropylene block copolymer is a multi-stage catalytic process. The technology is based on two-step polymerization carried out in a cascade of reactors.
First stage - in the first reactor, propylene homopolymerization occurs, forming the isotactic polypropylene matrix. This stage determines the stiffness and crystallinity of the future material.
Second stage - the obtained polypropylene matrix is transferred to the second reactor, where copolymerization of propylene and ethylene takes place in the presence of the same catalyst. At this stage, elastomeric blocks are formed - rubber-like inclusions of ethylene-propylene copolymer that provide high impact toughness.
Highly active Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems based on titanium or modern metallocene catalysts providing high stereoregularity are used. Polymerization can be carried out in suspension, in bulk, or in the gas phase. The process is conducted at 30-120 °C and pressure of about 1.0 MPa.
Unlike random (statistical) copolymers where ethylene units are randomly distributed in the chain, in block copolymers ethylene and propylene form ordered blocks (segments), giving the material a unique combination of properties. The ethylene content in the block copolymer is usually from 5 to 15 %.
Various additives are introduced into the block copolymer: antioxidants to protect against thermo-oxidative degradation, light stabilizers for UV protection, processing aids to improve processability, and colorants.
Key Physical and Mechanical Properties
Polypropylene block copolymer possesses a number of unique properties that determine its wide application.
Density is 0.90-0.92 g/cm³. It is one of the lightest polymers.
Melt Flow Index (MFI) can vary widely - from 0.3 to 40 g/10 min (at 230 °C, 2.16 kg) depending on the grade and application.
Tensile strength (yield point) is 25-30 MPa. The block copolymer is approximately equivalent to the homopolymer in strength, but slightly superior.
Tensile modulus is in the range of 1000-1200 MPa.
Impact toughness is the key advantage of PP-B. Impact strength at -20 °C is 5-10 times higher than that of homopolymer. The block copolymer can withstand temperatures down to -20 °C without significant loss of strength and impact toughness. Some grades remain operational down to -40 °C.
Shore hardness (D scale) is 68-70. The block copolymer has lower hardness and stiffness compared to homopolymer due to elastomeric inclusions.
Melting point is 150-165 °C, slightly lower than that of homopolymer (165-170 °C).
Maximum operating temperature (long-term) - up to 80-85 °C. Short-term exposure to +90 °C is acceptable.
Minimum operating temperature (long-term) - down to -40 °C. The block copolymer has high cold resistance.
Chemical resistance is very high. The material is resistant to most acids, alkalis, salts, and many organic solvents. Water absorption is less than 0.03-0.1 %. However, the material swells in chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons.
Electrical insulation properties are excellent: volume resistivity >10¹⁴ Ω·cm, surface resistivity >10¹³ Ω·cm.
Heat resistance - heat deflection temperature (HDT) at 0.45 MPa is about 100-125 °C. Vicat softening temperature is 120-150 °C.
Comparison with Other Types of Polypropylene
Polypropylene block copolymer (PP-B) differs from homopolymer (PP-H) and random copolymer (PP-R) in several key parameters.
Compared to homopolymer, the block copolymer is characterized by significantly higher impact strength and cold resistance, but is inferior in stiffness and heat resistance. The homopolymer is stiffer and has better resistance to elevated temperatures, but its impact toughness at low temperatures is low.
Compared to random copolymer, the block copolymer has higher impact toughness but lower transparency. The random copolymer has better transparency and elasticity but is inferior to the block copolymer in impact strength.
For pipe grades: PP-H has a maximum design series of 2.0 but cold resistance of only +5 °C; PP-B has a design series of 1.2 and cold resistance of -30 °C. This makes PP-B preferable for drainage and sewer pipes operated at low temperatures.
Applications of Polypropylene Block Copolymer
Thanks to its unique combination of stiffness and impact toughness, polypropylene block copolymer has found the widest application in various industries.
Automotive industry - one of the key applications. PP-B is used to produce bumpers, dashboards, interior upholstery, interior and exterior elements. The material is also used for automotive battery cases and containers for technical fluids. Due to its high impact resistance, PP-B parts provide safety in collisions.
Construction and pipe industry - PP-B is used for non-pressure pipelines, primarily drainage and sewer pipes. Also used for fittings, valves, and other connecting parts.
Packaging industry - PP-B is used to produce rigid packaging, containers, and boxes requiring both stiffness and strength. Packaging for frozen products is particularly in demand as the material retains impact toughness at low temperatures. Thin-walled containers and industrial packaging are also produced.
Consumer goods - a wide range of products: furniture, toys, household items, housings for appliances and office equipment. PP-B toys withstand intensive use due to high impact resistance.
Industrial equipment - containers for chemicals, tanks, reservoirs for water treatment and purification. PP-B is resistant to stress cracking.
Electrical engineering - housings for instruments, cable insulation.
Medicine - syringes, droppers, parts of medical equipment.
